Dr. Peter Lee graduated from Shenandoah Conservatory, where, as a Graduate Teaching Fellow, each semester he provides voice lessons to undergraduate students majoring in Musical Performance and CCM (Contemporary Commercial Music). In 2008 he graduated from Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, where he earned two Master of Music degrees, with concentration in Voice and in Early Music.

In 2011 Johns Hopkins University presented Dr. Lee with the prestigious Knowledge for the World Award (now known as the Global Achievement Award). During the summer of 2009 he was awarded first place in two categories of Taiwan’s prestigious Golden Melody Award, presented by the government of Taiwan as an equivalent of the Grammy Award. The Golden Melody committee recognized Dr. Lee as best vocalist and awarded him the best religious album of the year, in recognition of his recording Stabat Mater (Pergolesi and Vivaldi), in which he sings countertenor solos with Peabody Conservatory soprano faculty member Ah-Hong, accompanied by faculty specialists in early music. It is the fourth album in the series featuring Dr. Lee as both a tenor and a countertenor.

A native of Taiwan, Dr. Lee was born in Tainan in 1977. Following study in Taiwan, Dr. Lee went to America in 2000 to study voice at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and thereafter at Peabody Institute in Baltimore, where he earned three degrees under the tutelage of William Sharp and Stanley Cornett.

Equally skilled as tenor and countertenor, he has performed roles in Messiah, Elijah and St. Paul as tenor and St. John Passion as countertenor with choirs in Pittsburgh and Baltimore. He has been tenor soloist with the Shadyside Chancel Choir in a performance for the Eastern Regional Convention of the American Choral Directors Association. He has performed in recitals at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Yakult Hall in Tokyo and the National Concert Hall in Taipei and many other venues in America, Europe and Asia. On March 27, 2007, in The Baltimore Sun, Tim Smith wrote: “Tu madre cuando te pario featured rich vocalism from countertenor Peter Wen-Chih Lee.”

At the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Dr. Lee performed as tenor soloist in Bach’s Magnificat and countertenor soloist in Handel’s Psalm 135. At the Fairlington United Methodist Church (Washington, D.C.), Divinity Lutheran Church and Peabody Institute, he performed as tenor soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Cantata No. 78 and Mozart’s Requiem. He has also been alto soloist with the Peabody Chorus and Orchestra in Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus. With the Concert Artists of Baltimore he has performed Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor at the Golden Center. As a choir member at the Old St. Paul’s Church in Baltimore, he has also been a regular substitute tenor and countertenor in the professional choir of the Washington National Cathedral.
